Intermediate Ancient Greek

We will translate excerpts from three works recognized as among the most enjoyable in the western literary canon, and among the most influential in the history of literature and ideas: Homer's Odyssey, Herodotus' Histories (or Persian Wars), and The Gospel of John. We will stress translation from the Greek but also read all three works in English in order to appreciate them as a whole. Further, we will place each of them in its historical, literary and cultural context. With respect to Homer, with whom we'll spend the most time, we will also address questions of genre, textual history and criticism, oral composition, dialect, and scansion. Students will draw frequently on Kaegi's Greek Grammar to reinforce and supplement their understanding of the phonetics, inflection, and syntax of Greek.
